Frané is a dynamic presenter and shares with students of all ages the process of writing and illustrating picture books. Her workshops are pitched to the age group, ability level, and area of interest of the participants. Frané brings along for display: drafts, sketches, photographs, research notes, printers' proofs, and original artwork in order to convey the origins and inspirations of creating a picture book, enthralling and inspiring her audiences as she does so. Students become involved in the whole process of writing and illustrating books from the development of an idea through to the finished product. She shows that books have their beginnings in the imagination and aim at getting students to draw on their resources to start working from roughs and drafts through to a piece of creative writing, illustration, and book creation.

Born in New Jersey, Frané Lessac loves to travel and to work on books based on her worldwide journeys. "I try to portray the people and places of these countries to children in a sensitive, accurate, and educational way."

Attracted by the beauty of Montserrat, she moved in 1978 to the small Caribbean island, which inspired My Little Island (HarperCollins). The first of many books written and illustrated by Frané

A number of her paintings are part of private collections worldwide, and she has exhibited her work in international galleries. She studied at the New School for Social Research in New York City, the University of Southern California, and she studied Ethnographic Film at UCLA in California.
