Students become involved in the whole process of writing and illustrating books from the development of an idea through to the finished product. Did you know that New York children's book publishers receive 130,000 solicited manuscripts every year. Collectively, they publish 10,000. If you are sending unsolicited manuscripts, you can now see the reality of your situation. This is not to discourage, but to inform you. Information is power - if you use it.

.

DID YOU KNOW? Despite out best intentions and first efforts our requests for sponsorships were all politely turned down. However, one member was able to donate an 'old' computer to another. She is investigating repair costs versus buying new. I trust that ideas and opportunities to increase Caribbean members' benefits will evolve according to our 'group will' and investment. Most importantly everyone: keep writing, illustrating and dreaming up your best creative work. Any efforts we make to form as a group are intended only to support that, not distract or deplete any individual's resources.

-------------------------------------

2. Mr. Swan also indicated the starting up of a new science course, for which he will be scouting illustrators from contacts made at the seminar. Writing Critique Group - Courtesy of NALIS, an eclectic group of writers meets each Wednesday evening in the library’s first floor seminar room from 5-7pm. The group is open to the public. All you need is a passion for writing and a half dozen copies of what you’d like critiqued. We divide 120 minutes by the number of participants, and that is how long each writer gets to be critiqued. We wind the clock and whoever goes first distributes a copy of his/her writing to each participant and then proceeds to read the piece aloud. Critics may write comments on the piece or give them orally or both. Critics are encouraged to cite positive aspects as well as negative, although we don't dwell on the positive as it is the negative that the writer wishes identified. The writer does not explain unless asked--otherwise the writer wastes his/her valuable critique time. (If the writer has to explain what he/she means, then the piece needs revision!) When the buzzer sounds, all sheets are signed and returned to the writer and it's the next person's turn.

Ours is an amiable group of male and female, of varied ages, and the writing is varied: children's and young adults’ fiction, adult fiction and non-fiction, poetry. While writing abilities differ, we all are equally critical—we know what we like. And we have all benefited from the encouragement and constructive criticism of the group. Should you wish to participate, I can promise you a warm welcome!

CONTACT group facilitator Jeanne Mason at email: jmason@suffolk.lib.ny.us

--------------------------------------------------

Regional Advisor: Joanne Gail Johnson

www.caribbeanchildren.com

AUGUST Newsletter 2006

.
NOTICE: NO AUGUST MEETING AT NALIS IN TRINIDAD...STAY CONNECTED FOR DETAILS OF MEMBERS ONLY SEPTEMBER MEETING.

.

.

IN THIS ISSUE:-

1. EDGY, NOT CUTESY - was the order of the day at 2006 Oregon Coast Children's Book Writers Workshop. Children's authors advised to create stories that are pleasure first, entertainment driven adventures. SCBWI Caribbean South member, Bonnie de Young, who lives in St. Kitts was there. She filed this report:

.

I recently returned from Oceanside, Oregon, where I attended the 2006 Oregon Coast Children’s Book Writers Workshop. It was my first writer’s workshop and strangely enough, it was much like the plot of a story: an exciting/scary beginning, a roller coaster of problems and solutions in the middle, and a tremendously satisfying end.

.

Organized by David Greenberg ( Author of 'Slugs', 'Snakes', and 'Bugs' ), it was well attended, with about 48 participants in all. There were six authors, one agent and one editor present to teach the sessions each day. All of the authors were SCBWI members, the agent and editor were not. They spoke about SCBWI and how being a member can help us. Membership applications were passed out to everyone.

.

Some of the books the authors brought to sell at the workshop were more scary, edgy and gross even, than what was traditionally sold here on St.Kitts. Unfortunately, our bookstore is now closed and we have nothing at all!! I was happy to have some of my own work critiqued and learn about other points and view and the latest trends in publishing.

Here is what I gathered:

.

- There is a good market for YA fiction and nonfiction now.

- Humor and young romance is also popular.

- Picture books are a small part of the market.

- Consider writing short stories for magazines.

- Don’t wait to get an agent before you submit your stories to publishing houses. You probably won’t be able to get an agent unless you have published.

- If one editor rejects your work, don’t get discouraged, try another. Some published works have been rejected 15 times or more. Each editor has her or his own style, find one that matches yours.

- If you are writing stories like those in bookstores now, you have already missed that market. - The trend now in the U.S. is for edgy stories, with danger, a bit scary, but always a story the reader can identify with.

- Strangely, there was no mention of values. They did say if a story contains a lesson or moral, make it subtle. Don’t hit them over the head with it!

.

Bonnie's Bio:

Following a 30 year career in academic research in the U.S., I retired and moved to the Federation of St Kitts and Nevis in the West Indies in 2003 with my husband, David. Although much of my career has involved scientific writing and editing, I have had a long-time desire and commitment to write children's books. This ambition evolved many years ago when my two sons, DJ and Chris, were learning to read, and again when my grandson, John, came along. Unfortunately, my work and other commitments did not allow time to focus on the creative adventures in my life. That is until I retired and moved to this tropical island paradise with nothing but time on my hands! Here I am surrounded by free-range animals, beautiful mountains, rainforests and the Caribbean Sea. On weekend outings we explore our new home. Interacting with the exotic and domestic animals and the cultural wealth of the people and the island's colorful history inspire stories to emerge. Now I am far from the hustle and bustle of everyday life in the US. Living in this lovely country helps me to see life and its daily adventures in a new and different way.

.

RA's NOTE:

Thanks Bonnie for sharing some of what you learned with us! Hopefully we will host more regional workshops in time and see more members from our region travelling to international conferences too.

.

-------------------------------------------------------------

.

2. So, after you've written your sizzling best seller and composed a query letter that can't be refused, check on your manners, your expectations and your ego. Publishers and editors are people too. "They" are not some alien "Other", some God-like entity out to get OR save you. You are not required to approach in fear and trembling, nor to make sacrifices in order to appease. It is helpful however, if you employ common sense, courtesy and a growing awareness of the industry in which you work. (Or hope to!).

.

I recently attended a WIPO (World Intellectual Properties Orgainzation) conference here in Trinidad at the University of the West Indies hosted by CAPNET (Caribbean Publishers Network). One speaker wanted to illustrate the lengthy conveyor belt process from the time a manuscript is accepted to that glorious day when one FINALLY! has a finished product in hand. He walked the width of the lecture hall, back and forth, back and forth, back and forth and yet again, describing the infrastrustcture of a publishing house. By literally walking his talk he demonstrated that even in theory: it's a long way home!

.

My publishing editor with Macmillan Caribbean, Nick Gillard, said as much to me when my first title, Go Barefoot was contracted back in 1998. " It's a long slow process..." and he wsn't kidding. Unless you're Hilary Clinton or Madonna, the next Naipaul or Beyonce Bares All, it is unlikely you'll find yourself on the fast track. You can expect to be fairly treated and to increase your stature, not only as your talent grows, but as your in-house relationships blossom.

.

I understand well the creative frustration that puts us at risk of losing clarity, in terms of how we relate to the whole system. We may invest individuals with imagined power, or project unwarranted blame and expectations of unreasonable responsibilities. I have found there are many constructive ways to 'get published' if you're willing to value the small steps that are more frequently accessible and immediate. Check local magazines, news letters, even letters to the editor of local dailies and favorite magazines as possible avenues. Selecting pro bono work wisely (Start an alumni newspaper for your kid's graduating class!) can also lead to great professional exposure and an 'actual gig'. Today's internet offers free blogging and home sites that can get you and keep you writing infinitely. Such routine, self-directed exercise will give you experience in targeting your audience; learning your market; meeting editors' expectations; and receiving acceptance and rejection graciously.

.

If you have had a close encounter of any happy kind with an editor it can actually get you that much closer to getting published and is a privilege for any author/ illustrator. Remember, like you, she is dancing as fast as she can and is much more likely to want partners who can keep up but not dictate. Be sure you bring something to the party that will delight and you are much more likely to find a regular spot on her dance card.

.

So apply some age old life wisdom and do unto your (potential) editors only what you would wish for yourself. Cut yourself and everyone a little slack. Then cut loose and enjoy every opportunity to further your publishing career!

Write On!

-------------------------------------------

.

2. And the gig goes to....! After Macmillan Caribbean's Art Director scouted the Caribbean in April ( click here for Bob Swan's visit ), artists and photographers get call backs, and yes, real jobs!....

.

This week I had calls from a couple local photographers expressing appreciation for the opportunity to make it to the AD's short list after they met with Macmillan Caribbean's Bob Swan in April. They recently received "live briefs" for an upcoming book and now have, at the very least, an opportunity to negotiate for the work.

.

When I asked Bob about opportunities for new talent, he was both positive and conservative in his response saying that these relationships develop over a long period of time. Even if there is a suitable project on hand, new talent needs to be tried and tested... at the publisher's risk. Is it, and are you worth it? At the end of the day the AD needs to know if you can deliver. This is especially true with illustrators. Imagine this: manuscript is type set and waiting BUT after months and months illustrations are still not satisfactorily completed, due to artist's inexperience; not necessarily lack of talent. These delays and potential obstacles are going to cost. Some novices speak of getting published as though it were a fantasy "creative expression" they dream about, but it actually is "A Business" and how many earn a living! Use that as a sincere reality check and ask yourself if you're doing all you can to compete in the marketplace. Don't expect an Art Director to come to you - make the effort to follow up. Send brief and friendly postcards/ emails with sample art every 4 or 6 or 12 months at least, and keep your name and talent in the game, literally.

.

Bob shared these regional successes:

"I am using a well established Jamaican illustrator to produce some artwork for their curriculum texts for primary schools. He has also illustrated several others in the series in the last 2 years. Another Jamaican guy is producing a fiction cover right now, loosely based on Bob Marley, he is a new find via a designer who produced a Dance book for us as well as a novel cover and another to follow.

An established picture book artist in Barbados is currently drawing 7 covers for a new primary language course.

A Cuban artist has just delivered some amazing magical picture book artwork.

A Bajan artist who is also a teacher is about to deliver the 3rd picture book about a cat."

---------------------------------

.

3. NEWS & PHOTOS of SCBWI meeting at NALIS - June 2006

.

A small but very enthusiastic group attended our June meeting. Member volunteer Betty Peter hosted in my absence and filed this report with photos from member volunteer Francis Escayg:

.

"We sat around the table in the seminar room at NALIS where everyone participated in lively discussionson topics related to writing for children."

.

Our meeting commenced with an inspiring testimony from SCBWI member Francis Escayg on the discipline and motivation of writing, and his personal journey. His novel, "Escape From Silk Cotton Forest" has been accquired by Joanne and contracted for Macmillan Caribbean's new young teen series of "Island Fiction". Congratulations to Francis on his current achievements! Francis also distributed a nine page print out which included: 10 Disciplines for Fiction Writers; Creating Believable Characters; Show Don't Tell; and Branching Out - creating your character's family tree.

.

Guest speakers U.S-Trini resident Jeanne Mason and her friend Liz Lancaster who was visiting from the US were featured as well.

.

Jeanne presented a well researched document on the usefulness of starting a Critique group: goals, challenges, commitments to support and encourage others etc. and of course the fun and the friendship that participants may enjoy. Those present were all very interested and agreed to pursue the possibility of a critique group once we could make up a group of ten to twelve authors/ illustrators of children's work.

.

Liz Lancaster was a truly vibrant and motivational speaker . She challenged us to write stories that, in her experience, children like : stories with values, interactive stories, and ones they can go off and expand on. She said children also enjoy reading and learning about "other places".

.

(Note from SCBWI RA: Caribbean authors may interpret this to mean that their uniquely Caribbean perspective is a gift to the developing world. Whereas we have long learned about the world including much of the published media perspective of the Caribbean from others, we can now give ourselves permission to be the AUTHORities of our own stories.).

.

Members who did not attend, surely missed out on a wonderful opportunity to meet this positive, caring and involved person. We wish to express our appreciation to Jeanne for arranging Liz Lancaster's visit, and a special thank you to Liz for taking the time to share her thoughts and experiences with us."
.

WHO IS LIZ LANCASTER? Tradewind’s original mandate was to publish quality picture books that help young people understand the diverse and wonderful world we live in through story. Since one of the Publisher’s aims is to promote literacy, Tradewind has expanded its publication list to include novels for young readers.

For more information, please visit HYPERLINK "http://www.tradewindbooks.com" http://www.tradewindbooks.com/
.
Yasmin John-Thorpe is a children’s author and the co-founder of Penticton Writers and Publishers. SERIOUS ABOUT YOUR WRITING CAREER?
Join critique group for authors and illustrators of children's work only. The group is initially open to all (non-SCBWI members) writers but limited to twelve on a first come first served basis. If necessary, preference will be given to SCBWI members. Meetings will be held weekly for two hours at an agreed day and time according to group agreement and NALIS space and availability. Participants will critique others’ writing as well as bring their own writing to be critiqued.Guidelines for the critique group as put forward by its facilitator Jean Mason, are inkeeping with SCBWI guidelines, and will be discussed and demonstrated during the upcoming June meeting. Interested authors should attend and register membership in advance with Jeanne via email jmason@suffolk.lib.ny.us
--- More details below ---
.
INITIATING FACILITATOR:
Jeanne Mason jmason@suffolk.lib.ny.us . The group is limited to twelve members on a first come, first served basis, with priority given to members of SCBWI Caribbean South.
.
Meetings will be held weekly for two hours based on group agreement and space/time availability at NALIS or other convenient location for participants.
.
Participants must be willing to critique others’ writing as well as bring their own writing to be critiqued.
.
Whoever arrives first will facilitate the session. The facilitator will assure that the tables and chairs are arranged such that everyone may be seated around. The timer and attendance sheet will be placed on the table. Meetings will start promptly. The meeting’s facilitator will divide 120 minutes by the number of participants in attendance and each participant will have that amount of time to read his work and be critiqued. Remaining time may be readjusted for stragglers at the discretion of the group.
.
Each participant will bring 11 copies of his writing to be critiqued. When it is his turn, he will distribute these copies to the membership and read his selection aloud. On rare occasions when a participant does not have work to be critiqued, he should still attend and critique others’ works.
.
Critiquers will comment orally and in writing on others’ works: what works and what doesn’t, what makes sense and what seems unreasonable, what occurs without foundation, etc. It is considered polite but not required to sign written criticisms.
.
Critique etiquette:The fundamental quality of criticism is that it must be sincere. Criticism, positive or negative, should be specific. If you sincerely appreciate an aspect of the work, it is helpful to say so first to allow the writer to be more receptive to negative criticism. Negative criticism should include a suggestion for improvement.Make your point succinctly; be aware of monopolizing the time. Guide each other accordingly.
.
Participants are expected to attend each session. Should circumstances preclude your attending, please contact Jeanne Mason jmason@suffolk.lib.ny.us or leave a message at (868) 762-6225 for Joanne Johnson (SCBWI- Caribbean South Regional Advisor)
.
3. Vanessa Soodeen blog master for second year in a row.
